AI data centers have gone up quietly across the country — with little warning, little disclosure, and almost no input from the people who live beside them. This petition calls for that to change.
Over the past few years, many AI data centers have quietly popped up in many locations. So quietly that local residents have not had a say in the matter, nor have had the consequences been clearly delineated. As a result, people living near these datacenters have experienced some harmful effects, such as discolored water, a high-pitched whine 24/7, and of course, the environmental effects on the surrounding areas. This all suggests that the effects of these datacenters have not been fully vetted and residents have had little to no input about them. As a result, the residents have endured the negative consequences.

Some states have already passed legislation to limit taxpayer and ratepayer burden, and to require more comprehensive local participation The CS/CS/SB 484 bill has been passed in Florida and Senate bill 730 in North Carolina.
Requiring owners of datacenters to provide residents near a planned site or one already underway to have a say in how the data centers will be constructed.

A single large AI data center can use as much power as a small city — leaving less for residents, with costs often passed to ratepayers.
Water-based cooling can consume millions of gallons a year, bringing discoloration, contamination and lower water pressure.
Fossil-fuelled centers add greenhouse emissions — and even renewable ones carry the cost of building and manufacturing.
New substations, transmission, roads and water upgrades — costs that have landed on taxpayers and ratepayers.
AI hardware dates quickly; replaced GPUs, servers and networking gear become waste unless reused or recycled.
